The Prince William Classic Finals;

The Prince William Yankees defeated the Herndon Dawgs 5-1 behind Rick Fishers complete game effort, Fisher struck out 12 and scattered 6 hits over 9 innings, the Yankees put 5 runs on 11 hits and no errors up on the board and took home the 2003 Prince William Classic Championship.

The Yanks scored right out of the box in the bottom of the 1st, CF and lead-off hitter Eddie Pearson doubled down the left field and scored on SS Tim Nargi's RBI single back up the middle for a 1-0 Yankee lead. In the 2nd DH Jimmy Hayes drew a walk then C Stoney Frye blasted a towering shot over the right field wall for a 2-run Homerun and a 3-0 Yankee lead. In the Yankee 4th Jim Hayes and Stoney Frye both walked and Hayes came around to score on Eddie Pearson single to increase the lead to 4-0.

Up to this point the Dawgs had not threatened, but in their half of the 5th they loaded the bases when SS Redd singled, 3B Lowitz and C Rueffert walked, the Yankees surrendered a run on a fielders choice  by Nick Dijulio cutting the lead to 4-1, but the Dawgs could not manage another run. In the Yankees 7th with 2 outs Rick Fisher singled, pinch hitter Mike Kay singled then 3B Bobby Simmons RBI Double down the right field line scored Fisher for a Yankee 5-1 lead.

With some outstanding defensive plays by Yankee CF Ed Pearson, 3B Bobby Simmons and SS Tim Nargi, Rick Fisher made that 5-1 lead the Final and the Yanks took home their second Tournament Championship of the Year.

The Yankees also Congratulate the Prince William Classic 2003 Runners-Up Herndon Dawgs who also had an excellent tournament surrendering only 23 runs over 5 games.  We also thank the New York All-Stars and Gloucester (NJ) Yankees for traveling down to the tournament and playing some outstanding baseball. There is also our neighbors the DC Cardinals for whom this is their first tournament effort and they were able to come away with their first tournament win, and last but not least, our league companions the Dale City Blues who played 3 very hard fought games.

The PW Yankees hosted the Gloucester Yankees at the Stadium. Gloucester stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Prince William squad answered right back with 2 in the 1st, 3 in the 2nd and 1 in the 3rd to take a 6-4 lead. Prince William, VA---Sep 28, 2003

Final Pool play standings; with the pool play complete the Prince William Yankees finished 1st with a 3-0 record, both the Herndon Dawgs and New York All-Stars finished at 2-1 but the Dawgs take 2nd by virtue of their win over New York. So New York takes 3rd and Gloucester Yankees and DC Cardinals finish at 1-2 with Gloucester taking 4th place by giving up fewer runs, (16-30), than the Cardinals. So the Cardinals take 5th and Dale City 6th and out of the play-offs

Prince William, VA---Sep 23, 2003

The Prince William Yankees would like to welcome:

The New York All-Stars led by Manager Reggie Benson, Reggie and company have been in numerous tournaments and a perennial power house over the years and have meet the Yankees already twice this season at the Double Day Classic in Cooperstown NY and once last year at the Chesapeake tournament.

The Gloucester Yankees led by Manager Ed Noone, Gloucester are the 2003 28A Champions of Tri-State NABA in Southern NJ,  league president Hector & Tania Garcia. Gloucester  have never played the PW Yankees before but some of the players are familiar with the Yanks from other squads.

The Herndon Dawgs led by Manager Joey Kamide.  The Dawgs have squared off before against the Yanks but that was nearly a year ago as the Dawgs found a new home in the Industrial league for 2003.

The DC Cardinals led by Manager and DC Wood NABA League president Rich Huber.  The DC Cardinals were runner up in their league world series in 2003, there may be no surprises between the Yanks and Cards as several players from the Yankees competed against them last year with the Alexandria Yankees.

The Dale City Blues led by Manager Shannon Helton, the Yanks and Blues matched up 4 times already this season because the Blues as well as the Yankees participated in the Triple A division of NOVA NABA, league President Pete Jones.

As your host the Prince William Yankees and Manager Tim Nargi welcome all of you who made this tournament possible, it is never easy to get a tournament going especially a first time one, a special thanks to the New York and Gloucester Clubs who are traveling at their own expense to be here and add outside flavor to the Tournament.

Also a thank you to Bob Conrad who helped get the umpires organized, to Mark Ashby President of the SVBL who got us the baseballs for the tournament in time, PW County for getting us the permits and PW Stadium ready, Heritage Church for helping get Heritage Field ready and especially, without her support none of this would have been possible, my wife Christine.

So if you see her around thank her for letting me do this!

We sincerely hope everyone enjoys the tournament;

"Let's Play Ball!!!"
