The Yankees captured the 2006 Championship by sending out there ACE to the hill Dave Beckner who went 7 strong innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and 6 strikeouts. The Yankees got things started in the 2nd as DH George Adam got things started with a lead-off single followed by Cunni Moeller Singles, Rick Fisher then stroked a double to put the Yanks up 1-0, Moeller doubled in the 4th, stole 3rd and scored on Fisher RBI Sac-fly to right to make it 2-0 Yankees. The Brewers struck back in the 4th as Vasquez was hit by pitch, Ramirez singled sending Vasquez to 3rd, Ted Nevin then singled to score Vazquez and Ramirez went to third. The Brewers attempted a double steal but parker was erased at second by Yankee catcher Dan Baker but Ramirez scampered home on the play to tie the game at 2. The Yankees struck right back in the top of the 5th as Mark Sterling walked stole second and went to third on the bad throw, SS Tim Nargi then Singled Sterling home for a 3-2 Yankee lead. The Brewers Pitcher Backe finally tired and on came Jeff Ermi for the Brewers in the 6th, the Yankee 6th was productive as Adam led off with a single, pinch runner Brett Spencer then stole second, Moeller singled moving Brett to third, then 1B Yonnie Ezring singled home Spencer, Moeller moved to third on a stolen base and scored on Steve D'Aquila single as the Yankees took a 5-2 lead. Woodbridge, VA---Aug 24, 2006
Looks like this match-up between the Prince William Yankees and the Potomac Brewers is going to go down to the wire. Game 1 of the Blue & Gray Championship series is has currently been suspended in the 12th inning with the teams tied at 4 apiece. The Potomac Brewers won the Stafford Division title as did the Yankees win the Prince William Division title, so it is appropriate that these two clubs meet in the Championship game, but what a match-up we have that has forced game one to reach the 12th inning and still yet to have a winner. Update: Game 1 was finally decided in the 13th inning.
Game 1, Day 1.... The Brewers got on the board first, LF Jamie Owen Doubled went to third on a fielders choice then scored on a wild pitch in the 1st inning. In the 4th the Yankees got things going as lead-off hitter Mark Sterling reached on an infield single, SS Tim Nargi walked and CF Brian Tirch moved the runners up grounding out to second, DH Jon Bybee then grounded out to second scoring Sterling, Nargi later scored on 3B George Adam single to left and the Yanks took a 2 -1 lead. The Brewers got even in the 5th as the Yankees threw the ball around committing 2 errors to allow the Brewers to score a run. The sixth inning saw Sterling reach on an error, then with Nargi's bunt single moving Sterling to second, Jon Bybee doubled scoring Sterling and the Yanks led once again 3-2. The Brewers then generated their first real offense of the night as CF Ramirez doubled and SS Turberville drove him home with a single to center, DH Ted Nevins singled moving Turberville to third who then scored on a fielders choice by RF Vazquez and the Brewers took a 4-3 lead. The Brewers held the lead going into the bottom of the ninth, with one out Jon Bybee again doubled to right and the Yanks have there opportunity to stay alive, 2B Rob Kloehn came on to pitch run and moved up to third on George Adams fly out to center, with 2 outs and 2 strikes on the batter with the tying run 90 feet away DH Cunni Moeller came through for the Yankees with a huge base hit to left center to score Kloehn and tie the game at 4. The 10th inning proved even more dramatic as Vasquez of the Brewers tripled with only 1 out, with the infield in, PH Steve Smith for the Brewers hit a fairly deep fly ball to right field, with the speedy Vasquez tagging Yankee right fielder Jordan Lovell made the catch and threw a laser beam home to catcher Dan Baker in time to get Vasquez and the final out of the inning and keep the game tied. The Yankee half of the tenth saw the Yankees load the bases with two outs on a Dan Baker single, Sterling walk and Tim Nargi single, PH Stoney Frye came to the plate and worked a long count then hit a sharp ground ball to the right of third but Brewer 3B Steve Smith made a heck of of stop and was able to get the out and send the game to the 11th inning. Both teams went quietly in the 11th when time ran out and are heading to the 12th inning of the great match-up to start off the Blue & Gray Championship Series. Game 1, Day 2..... Inning 12 picked up at the Stadium Saturday, the Brewers went 1-2-3 in the top half. The Yankees threatened in the bottom of the 12th but the Brewers turned an ending inning double play to send the game to the 13th. Ted Nevins started the top of the 13th reaching on an error, he was erased at 2nd by a Vasquez fielders-choice, the speed demon Vasquez then tried to steal second base, Yankee Catcher Dan Baker throw was in time but high, Yankee Shortstop Tim Nargi applied the tag, but late, however Vazquez over slide second and Nargi dove to get him before he could get back to the base, this ended the Brewer threat in the 13th. Yankee lead-off man Mark Sterling led off the 13th drawing a walk, then the Yankees pulled a hit and run, Nargi singled through the left side of the infield allowing Mark to take 3rd base, CF Brian Tirch was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs bringing the hot hitting Jon Bybee to the plate, Bybee crushed an 0-2 pitch, but right at the Brewer 1st baseman Nobbs for out #1, so it was up to 3B George Adam, George hit a groundball to the shortstop Steve Smith who could not get a good relay to Brewer 2B Morgan and George beat the throw avoiding the double play as Mark Sterling crossed home plate with the winning run. Steve D'Aquila started for the Yankees and went 7 2/3 giving up 4 runs 3 earned, 5 strike outs. Jon Bybee came on in the 7th inning and went 4 1/3 shutting down the Brewers with no runs and 7 K's, David Beckner pitched a scoreless 12th to get the win.
Peter Sullivan started for the Brewers and went 9 innings giving up 4 runs 3 earned, 9 K's , Backe was the loser surrendering the Yankee run in the 13th, Backe went 3 2/3 1 run on 4 hits with 4 K's.

Prince William, VA---Aug
19th, 2006 This ball game was knotted at 1 apiece at the end of Eight innings. Pitchers Dave Beckner of the Yankees and Matt Cline of the Mets kept the hitters off balance all day in this defensive struggle.
The Mets got on the board first on a solo homerun by Trejo in the bottom of the 5th. The Yankees managed their first hit of the day as Catcher Dan Baker singled in the top of the sixth, Baker stole second and moved to third on DH mark Sterling's ground-out, SS Tim Nargi then singled to left scoring Baker and tying the game at 1. the Mets threatened again in the 7th but with 2 on and 1 out 3B Ryan james scored a ball in the hole between 1st and 2nd, that's when Yankee 2B Robbie Kloehn came up with a huge stop and started a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning and keep the game knotted at 1. The Yankees finally broke it open in the top of the ninth, Nargi led off with a single, followed by CF Brian Tirch hit-and-run single, DH Jon Bybee stepped up and doubled off the right field wall scoring Nargi giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead. 3b George Adam promptly singles to left scoring Tirch and allowed Bybee to reach third, Bybee then scored on a wild pitch, 1 out later, LF Brett Spencer Triples to the gap in right scoring 1b Yonnie Ezring to make it a 5-1 Yankee lead.
The Mets did not quit, getting the first two runners on base to lead off their half of the ninth, an out and another single later and it was Yanks 5 Mets 2 with the Mets 3b Ryan James as the tying run coming to the plate. Prince William, VA---Aug
5th, 2006 The Yankees were forced to go with an emergency starter today as the scheduled starter and back-up failed to show or show on time. The Lake Ridge Dodgers took advantage of this taking a 4 -0 lead in the top of the first. The Yankee offense was present but stranded many runners during the game. Yankee pitching was still suspect the rest of the day giving up many walks as the Dodgers went out to a 9-4 lead entering the bottom of the ninth. The Yankees did not quit and put together a rally behind five hits and a couple of their own walks to score 4 times and salvage a 9-9 tie which in turn lowered the magic number to win the Prince William Division to 1.
CF Eddie Pearson and DH Cunni Moeller each had 2 out 2 run singles in the ninth to help the Yankees avoid the loss. SS Tim Nargi went 3 for 4 with a couple walks and 1B Craig Kaufman went 3 for 5 with a double to lead the Yankees 16 hit attack. Than Yankees can wrap up the Division with a win in one of their next 2 games or a loss by the second place club.

The Yankees opened their pre-season schedule with a match-up against the Quantico Bulldogs at Heritage on Saturday. You could tell the rust and cobwebs were there as the Yankees committed error after error and the Bulldogs ran away with this one trouncing the Yanks 14-7. The Yankees did bat all 14 players in an effort to get a look at all hitters, but no offense could get generated with such a long time between at bats, Yankee arms were not all that bad on the hill but left room for improvement. We'll just chalk this one up to it being so early in the season, the Yanks should get on track next week as this was only their 1st game and 2nd practice...well see.
